Course Description

ENG 028 is a systematic and rigorous survey of the structure of English grammar. The course explores the usage problems associated with grammar in both speech and writing. The course also focuses on the three fundamental issues underlying all errors of grammatical usage: the notion of Standard English, the effects of language change on English grammar, and the effects of language attitudes on our ideas of “correct” English. This course will satisfy the requirement for future English teachers.

Course Objectives

This course aims to improve the speaking skills of students by providing learning experiences to:

1.       acquire skills in analyzing simple and complex English sentences;

2.       explain and justify sentence analysis;

3.       provide the necessary information with regard to the                     metacognitive knowledge of the English language;

4.       develop students’ grammaticality and understanding of the            language;

5.       build confidence in the use of the English language both in oral and written form.
